Engine

There are three different engine options for the 2018 Highlander: a 2.7 L 4 cylinder with a 185 hp output and 184 lb-ft of torque; a hearty 3.5 L V-6 with a whopping increase in horsepower and torque to 295 hp and 263 lb-ft; and an additional hybrid powertrain that combines the 3.5 L V-6 with three electric motors, a CVT transmission and a nickel metal hydride battery for an output of 306 horsepower. The latter is quite the mouthful, so feel free to refer to it simply as ‘the hybrid’.

The V-6 is paired to an exclusive eight-speed automatic with ultimate road control, whilst the other engine options are to be paired to a less robust but sufficiently capable six speed automatic transmission. When properly equipped, the four-cylinder Highlander can tow up to 1,500 pounds, the hybrid powertrain is good for 3,500 and V-6 equipped Highlanders can tow 5,000 pounds.
